Abstract: The flood pulse of the great rivers can be considered a natural disturbance affecting diverse organisms in tropical ecosystems. This natural process modifies the landscape, changing the forest structure located near the rivers. Flooded forests are called igapós, when they are periodically flooded by nutrient-poor rivers and várzea forests, when they are periodically flooded by rivers relativetly richer in nutrients. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of periodic flooding on the occurrence, richness, composition and functional diversity of ant assemblages during the flood and dry season. We collected ants in 14 transects located near the Juruá River in Carauari, Amazonas, using terrestrial pitfall, Winkler extractors, beating the vegetation and arboreal pitfall. We measured thirteen morphological traits used to evaluate the functional diversity of ants. We used Analysis of Variance to compare taxonomic diversity metrics (occurrence and species richness) between periods (flooded and unflooded) and forest types (várzea and terra firme forests) in each stratum (soil/litter and arboreal). The species composition was compared by Multivariate Permutation Analysis. We calculated three functional diversity indexes for each transect: functional richness (FRic), functional eveness (FEve) and functional dispersion (FDis). We used the standardized effect size (SES) of FRic and FDis to control possible effects of diferences in species richness between transects. Each index was compared following the same analytical procedure described above. Finally, we compared the weighted means by the occurrence of the species of four functional traits directly related to flood responses. In general, the sampling period (flooded or unflooded) was not related to any metric used for both taxonomic diversity and functional diversity. Terrestrial ants were more frequent and diverse in terra firme forests compared to várzea forests. Conversely, arboreal ants tend to be more frequent in várzea forests compared to terra firme forests, but the number of species was similar. In total, 36% of arboreal species and 56% of terrestrial species occurred only in terra firme forests. Functional eveness and dispersion were different among forest types for arboreal species. For the terrestrial species, the indices were similar among forest types. The functional space used by the species was similar between forests types for both, terrestrial and arboreal species. However, separately, the four functional traits showed differences between forest types. Arboreal ants tend to be larger than arboreal ants that live on terra-firme forests. Terrestrial ants, on the other hand, tend to have proportionally smaller legs in terra-firme forests. Together, these results suggest that floodplain forests are more selective habitat for arboreal ants, since larger bodies have less dissecting risks and that terrestrial ants exploit the available resources in the litter of terra-frime forests, since proportionally smaller legs facilitate the locomotion between the interstices of the litter. The relative lower diversity of ants assemblages in the varzea forests suggests that the flooding period affects important factors for the establishment of ants, such as nesting, diet and foraging, and causes changes in the morphological traits related to the specific functions of the species.
