Abstract: The occurrence of gravity waves (GWs) in the Amazonian nocturnal boundary layer (NBL) was investigated with data from micrometeorological towers installed in three experimental sites located in different regions, namely: ATTO and ZF2, located in the state of Amazonas, and Rebio- Jarú located in the state of Rondônia. Initially, through the mathematical tool known as wavelet transform with complex Morlet wavelet, the occurrence of GWs in the NBL was detected. After the identification of the waves, it was possible to perform a climatology of the occurrence of these events in terms of scales, duration and time of occurrence. It was observed that GWs preferentially occur before dawn, and have an average duration of around 55 min, with an occurrence scale of approximately 21 min. We also investigated the behavior of turbulent flows of energy and matter above the forest canopy of the three experimental sites at different times, such as: before, during and after the passage of the GWs. It was noted that in general; i) mean wind speed U and temperature T often decrease during the occurrence of GWs; ii) Turbulent activity is reduced (lower TKE values), and consequently the sensible heat fluxes H and momentum, τ , decrease during the presence of GWs; iii) the concentration of CO2 increased during the occurrence of the waves. For a better understanding of the role of GWs in the vertical and horizontal transport of energy and matter, a case study was used for the ATTO and Jarú sites. It was found that the flows and concentrations of scalars suffer significant effects on the horizontal and vertical transport during the passage of the wave. In this work, we also used a case study to investigate the role of coherent turbulent structures (CS), GWs and low-level jet propagation (LLJ) in the NBL inside and above the canopy at the ATTO site. Seven levels of wind speed and temperature measurements allowed the study of the structure of the flow within and above the surface layer. We analyzed three distinct periods. In the first, the NBL is characterized by CE generated at the top of the canopy. In the second period, the change in wind direction triggers the onset of an orographic OG above the rough sublayer. The wave inhibits the propagation of CE and strongly influences the boundary layer structure, both above and below the canopy. In the third period, the low intensity of turbulence at the top of the canopy allows the development of a LLJ. As the shear jet layer propagates upward, it interrupts wave oscillations, while the LLJ dominates the flow dynamics. Furthermore, scalar concentrations proved to be very efficient for identifying the LLJ nose as the ascending limit of how far scalars can be transported. In this way, it was found that GWs directly influence the transport of energy and matter in the NBL at the forest-atmosphere interface in Amazonian sites, which allows for a more general understanding of the role of this type of phenomenon in the NBL of the Amazon and its impact in forest-atmosphere exchanges.
