Abstract: Aiming at to establish a standard of development of the peach palm {Bactrís gasipaes Kunth) for the production of heart-of-palm in Central Amazônia, the growth and yield of spineless and spiny plants (main and first off-shoot) was evaluated, when managed with different forms of fertilization. The experiment was installed in the campus of the Federal School grotechnology of Manaus - EAFM, in Febmary of 1999. The germplasm used was ffom Hermosa Pampa landrace (Yurimaguas, Peru). The soil type is a typical Yellow Oxisol, the area used was a second growth woodland, which had previously been cropped with annual plant, resulting in low fertility (pH = 4.1; P = 1.9 mg./dm^; Ca = 0.4 Cmolc/dm^; Al = 1.4 Cmolc/dm^). The climate is Afi (Kõppen), with mean temperature of 28°C, mean annual precipitation of 2,350 mm, relative humidity of 80%, and with a small dry season from July to October. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with three repetitions, with a 2x7 factorial, with two types of plant (spineless and spiny on stem and leaf sheath/petiole), and seven forms of fertilization: control; manure in the planting pit (5 kg of laying hen manure); mineral fertilizer in the planting pit (225 - 90 - 180 kg/ha of N - P2O5 - K2O); manure spread, 1 month after planting (5 kg); mineral fertilizer spread, 1 month afler planting (225 - 90 - 180 kg/ha of N - P2O5 - K2O); manure (2,5 kg) in the pit + mineral fertilizer (112,5 - 45 - 90kg/ha of N - P2O5 - K2O) spread 1 month after planting; mineral fertilizer parceled in three (75kg/ha ofN, 90 kg/ha of P2O5 and 60 kg/ha of K2O in the pit and two applications of 72kg of N and 60 kg of K2O every three months). The same fertilizations were repeated in the 2° and 3° years by broad casting. The control did not reach harvest height the 27 months after planting. Different standards of growth of the main plant were not observed in terms of spines and fertilization forms, although the so she influence that of the lack of precipitation was evident. The growth of the offshoot was faster than that of the main stem, probably because the root system was already established. The harvest height (1.50 m) of the main stem was attained at 18 months and in the offshoot at 27 months afler planting. The duration of heart-of-palm, harvest of both the main stem and the off-shoot was 12 months. The dry period reduced the NAR annually, although stems some reached harvest height during this time. The yield heart-of -palm of the main stem did not present differences between the spineless and spiny plants (1045.4 and 1036.8 kg/ha, respectively, afler 12 months), but in the off-shoot the spiny plants produced more of the spineless ones (1407.4 and 1036.9 kg/ha, respectively, (p<0,05), due to the larger number of hearts-of-palm extracted. This occurred even though the spineless plants presented a greater number of off-shoots (7119 spiny offshoots/ha and 5143 spineless off-shoots/ha). The yield of heart-of-palm did not present significant differences among the different forms of fertilization, although "manure spread "one month afler planting (main stem was 1551.86 kg/ha and off-shoots was 3004.73 kg/ha) and "manure in the pit + minerai fertilizer spread " (main stem was 1545,56 kg/ha and ofF-shoots was 2986,12 kg/ha) presented greater total yields (heait-of-paim, tender stem and tip), due to the greater number of hearts-of- palm extracted. The average time to harvest the main stem was 23 months (with spines) and 24 months (without spines), while in the off-shoots it was 16 months (with spines) and 17 months (without spines). The presence or absence of spines did not affect the heart-of-palm yield. Fertilization was essential, but the forms of fertilization used did not show biological differences, suggesting that the cost will be the important factor. The climate had a visible effect that it needs to be recognized by Agroindustry.
