metadata.dc.description.resumo: Baryancistrus xanthellus is a species of great economic importance, because its morphological features and color patterns make it one of the most commercialized ornamental fishes at Altamira city. It is found in the whole area of Volta Grande do Xingu, the region where Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant is being built, threatening this fish existence. Cytogenetic studies for Ancistrini are scarce, restricting mainly to classic cytogenetics. The present work had as objective characterizing cytogenetically, by means of classic and molecular tools, specimens of B. xanthellus, collected in four sites of Volta Grande do Xingu and verifying if there are any differences among these specimens, according to their sites. The results indicated the conservation of the diploid number equal to 52 chromosomes, a simple nucleoli organizer region confirmed by the interstitial 18S rDNA and 5S rDNA mapping in a single pair. Large heterochromatin blocks were observed in pairs 1 and 10 and in the regions equivalent to the NOR and to the 5S rDNA. Mapping Rex1, Rex3, and Rex6 retroelements resulted in spread markings in the whole chromosomal set. Variations among the specimens from the four sites were not observed, indicating that, despite the low motility of this species, rocky areas and river chutes are not acting as barriers, thus, avoiding chromosomal differences accumulation. Yet, the data obtained in this work corroborate the most accepted phylogenetic proposition for Ancistrini, that Baryancistrus genus occupies a basal position in this tribe.
