A limnologia e a sua importância em pesquisas da Amazônia
(1965) Sioli, Harald; Sioli, Harald
The word Limnology originally means the science of lakes. And, considering that a lake is one of the expressions of the geological, mineralogical, pedological and climatic character of a region, the comparison of lakes from different regions led to the establishment of the so-called Regional Limnology, which precisely wants to clarify these relationships of dependence between the terrestrial environment and the character of the lake. In this way, Limnology is a sector not only of the biological sciences, but also of the so-called geosciences. The problems to be studied within the limits of Limnology can be very specialized, but the final aim is always to recognize the body of water as a whole which, in turn, is only a part of the nature of the environment, an organ of it, and dependent on it. We chose, therefore, the waters of the Amazon as an object of study, not to solve specific problems of any water, but for us to approach an understanding of the peculiarities of the Amazon, based on what the waters can tell us.
