Abstract: The araza (Eugenia stipitata McVaugh, Myrtaceae) was domesticated in Peru and has been the subject of both research and development while expanding from its original distribution into the rest of tropical America. This paper summarizes research in Latin America to facilitate further research and, especially, development in the region. Taxonomy, bio-geography, ecological requirements, nursery management, field establishment, harvest techniques and post-harvest handling are reasonably well defined. Seed technology, vegetative propagation techniques, plantation establishment (especially density, geometry, intercropping and agroforestry designs) and management (fertilization, ground covers, and weed, pest and disease control), processing, costs of production all require further research and market creation requires more imagination and work. The araza is highly productive (< 23 t/ha/yr) with adequate management on poor soils, with a high product/waste ratio (63-85%), an attractive flavor and appearance for international markets and great processing potential.
