In this chapter, the appearance and functioning of electroreceptors and electric organs (EO) in Neotropical fish is addressed. Initially, the presence of both types of specialized organs is mapped on the vertebrate phylogeny in order to emphasize the widespread and ancient occurrence of electroreceptors and the more recent appearance of EOs. Under a phylogenetic hypothesis, it is possible to deduce the multiple “inventions” of both electroreceptors and EOs in fish. Subsequently, sources of electric fields in the environment are briefly examined, followed by a condensed explanation of the general anatomical and physiological properties of electroreceptors and EOs. Toward the end, the main anatomical, physiological, and functional characteristics of these specialized organs are described for each fish group occurring in the Neotropic. Emphasis is given to the South American electric fish, due to the larger amount of published data for this group. © 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.pt_BR
