Abstract:
When roads open up, man moves with them. In Brazil, highway construction has been associated with migration which has in turn caused deforestation as the migrants seek to make their new homes habitable as well as make a living. Interestingly, once migrants have been installed for a time, deforestation slows as they devote more effort towards conserving their resources. Satellite photographs have been able to track some of these changes. -Author
