Over the past years the environmental monitonng programmes have undergone rapid conceptual and technological advancement. In the absence of effective biomonitonnn. detection of serious environmental contamination and threats to 71 - 89 human heaith caused by chemical pollutants may occur only after critica1 and irreversible damage has been done.
